Proposed Red Feather Lakes Elementary Closure Would Reassign Students in 2027

Poudre School District’s September 25 recommendation would close Red Feather Lakes Elementary and assign children in the Red Feather Lakes, Livermore and Stove Prairie school boundaries to Cache la Poudre Elementary beginning in fall 2027. The school board has not approved the change. Families can address the board at an October 6 listening session in Livermore.

The district’s mountain-school information describes a current arrangement of three campuses with combined-grade classrooms. Assigning all three boundaries to Cache la Poudre would change where those children go to school. The district’s family FAQ says eligible students who request a bus would continue to receive transportation to their assigned neighborhood school; it does not specify future ride times.

Why the change is contested

The recommendation is part of a district plan to close nine schools and consolidate two others. Superintendent Brian Kingsley cites sustained enrollment decline and the difficulty of maintaining staffing and programs at under-enrolled schools. A petition opposing the Red Feather Lakes closure warns that longer trips on mountain roads would burden families and that the community would lose a gathering place. Those are concerns about the proposed change, not effects already in place.

When families can weigh in

The board’s schedule lists the October 6 session for 6 to 7:30 p.m. MDT at Livermore Elementary School, 360 W County Road 74E. A presentation is scheduled for October 13, followed by a planned board vote on October 27. The district also accepts online feedback before a decision.
