Craig Hospital Tops Out Englewood Building; At Least 26 Patient Rooms Planned

Craig Hospital said September 28 that a ceremonial beam was placed atop its new East Building in Englewood on September 24. The expansion is designed to add at least 26 patient rooms for a hospital specializing in spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation. The construction milestone does not mean those rooms are open.

At Craig’s 3425 S. Clarkson Street campus, plans call for 12 rooms in a proposed neuromedical unit and at least 14 additional inpatient rooms. Craig’s foundation projects that the completed expansion could enable the hospital to serve 13% to 15% more patients annually. That is a forecast of future capacity, rather than an increase already achieved.

More space for care and research

Craig announced the project on October 14, 2025, after an October 10 groundbreaking. Its plans call for more than 86,000 square feet in the East Building. The hospital’s September 28 update also describes more than 8,000 square feet for translational research and a Human Movement Lab.

Funding and timing

Craig’s foundation has set a $100 million fundraising goal for its Hope & Homecomings campaign, which supports both campus work and programs. Separately, it estimates the capital components of the entire campus expansion at more than $200 million, with reserves and bonds expected to cover costs not met by philanthropy. The fundraising goal is not the price of the topped-out building.

Craig expects construction to continue through fall 2028, a schedule the foundation says may change. For prospective patients, families and referring clinicians, the added rooms remain a planned expansion of access, rather than capacity available today.
